Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school, of about 475 students in grades K-5, is made up of a culturally diverse population. I have students from several different countries, spanning 5 different continents! These students come from many different backgrounds and many different household incomes. Due to this, some students lack the exposure to different physical activities yet they come to school everyday excited for whatever activity I provide for them.
As a physical education teacher, part of my job is to help my students understand the importance of lifelong fitness.
All children have their own special talents, and I would like my students to be able to experience as many different physical activities as I can provide for them. From team sports to individual sports, and aerobics to rock climbing. I want my students to be able to find a physical activity that they enjoy and will help them maintain a physically healthy lifestyle.
My Project
I feel it is my job to expose my students to all types of physical activity. From common team sports to fitness activities. Adding a rock climbing wall to my gym would be the ultimate experience for my students. The rock climbing wall would give my students a different challenge than they are used to. It will help them improve personal fitness, learn and apply strategies, and practice responsible and respectful interaction with their peers. Rock climbing can be so much fun because it allows you to see how physical and mental strength work together to complete a goal.
My students deserve to experience new activities that they might not otherwise experience outside of school.
Having a rock climbing wall in our gym would bring new excitement to physical education class as well as each student's own physical journey. Students will learn there is more to physical activity than playing team sports.
My hope is that by adding a rock climbing wall to my gym it will encourage kids to start exploring outdoors more often and spend less time playing video games and watching tv. By helping to fund this project you are helping my students improve both their physical and mental health. They will build upper body strength, become more agile, build confidence and self esteem, and improve upon their problem solving skills. These are all important qualities to help anyone live a physically and mentally fit life.
