My students are creative and loving. They have joyous personalities and show up each day to learn. The majority of the students are on the autistic spectrum and spend 4-5 class periods in one of two special education classrooms. In these classrooms, the students receive individualized attention from the three adults (one teacher and two aides) present. Here, they can be themselves, laugh with peers who understand their humor and share their interests.
Our school is small which allows the students in this classroom to be part of a larger, supportive community.
The students participate in grade level activities such as year-long projects, field trips, and internships. While our school offers unique opportunities, it still faces challenges. We are a Title I school in an urban area and our school district is currently experiencing a fiscal crisis. In the middle of this unrest, our staff works hard to create a supportive and safe environment for our students.
My students need help covering the cost of a visit to an indoor rock climbing gym. We have an amazing opportunity to take a group of 30 students climbing. This is an activity that students have never been exposed to before nor is it usually financially viable. With help covering the entrance fee, we can turn this dream into a reality.
Providing my students with the opportunity to rock climb can help build positive self-worth and collaboration skills in addition to muscles.
Students will be given a chance to learn the skills of rock climbing (belaying, bouldering, and safety) and then put those skills to the test as they spend time belaying one another in the gym and bouldering. We just need some extra financial support to cover our costs of entering the climbing gym. Your contribution will make a world of difference!
