Ms. Mitchell from Staten Island NY is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Climbing the Common Core

My students need books to stimulate their ideas and promote discussion amongst themselves. They need to learn to play with each using turn-taking games and activities.

My Students

My students have a wide range of language needs that can be fulfilled with great literary works. Their sense of wonder can be opened and expanded through books that nurture their curiosity and open new worlds.

My students are a special group with a variety of needs.

They demonstrate an eagerness to engage in their work when presented with motivating materials such as a book that makes them "wonder." Our school supports the individual needs of our students as well as seeking materials and activities to create a "we environment" for broad educational and social growth. With our support, the students have accomplished so much this past year including the on-stage performance of a wonderful story for their peers and parents. Our school is always striving to find ways to increase each students academic skills.

My Project

With the appropriate resources, the educational possibilities are numerous. A book such as "The Hat" would introduce an alternate setting for my students helping them to visualize "the setting" for any book they are presented with. The same book provides the concepts of categorizing and describing the characters and objects from the book. Building on these skills facilitates the expressive language for my students who struggle to organize what they are learning and to formulate appropriate responses, both verbal and written. The students will be able to target the identification of the setting, the characters, and to answer "WH" questions about texts as well. The books I am seeking provide visual supports for multi-sensory learning.

My students have special needs and benefit from the use of extra-special resources.

Their diverse learning styles require the use of a variety of approaches. The appropriate resources can help facilitate learning in individualistic ways.
