Have you ever climbed to the top of North Carolina's oldest standing lighthouse? If you have, you have viewed the breathtaking coastline through the eyes of the lighthouse keeper while learning about the history of Old Baldy. If you have not, you need to start planning your trip!
Pretend that your teacher just asked you, "how would you like to learn about the famous landmarks and history of your home state?"
What would your answer be? Chances are, your answer would reflect actively traveling and exploring your home state, not burying your head in an outdated social studies textbook. I teach fourth grade at a Title I school of dedicated, curious, and passionate students from diverse backgrounds. Often, my students come to school with a lack of background knowledge and understanding that they can apply to their learning. As a result, class field trips are one of the few avenues that students can take that will provide them with authentic and valuable learning experiences.
My Project
If our project is fully funded, we will be able to watch our students with awe as they experience the excitement and adventure of riding on a North Carolina Ferry boat. Part of their adventure will include smelling the salty air and observing Mother Nature's beauty. After arriving on the island, our students will be able to step into adventure at the "Lighthouse Learners Program." Here, our students will be able to participate in four educational programs that will build their understanding of Old Baldy and the beautiful Bald Head Island. While experiencing the "Lighthouse Learners Program," students will revel in a classroom without borders on the coast of North Carolina. Instead of viewing famous landmarks of North Carolina as photographs in a textbook, students will be able to admire them firsthand. And, instead of reading about the history of our home state, students will be able to immerse themselves firsthand in the history of the Old North State.
When our students reflect back on their fourth grade year, we want them to fondly recall the experiences and adventures that they had while actively learning.
Our desire is for our students to have a memorable field trip where they learn, discover, and explore! Please help our students have this once in a lifetime adventure. It will surely spark their love of learning.
