Ms. Felix from Bronx NY is requesting Supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 2 keyboards, an amplifier, and keyboard stickers to begin basic keyboard music instruction.
Do you remember when you received your first instrument? The excitement you felt, and the time you spent trying to play your first song? This project is geared towards making instruments, specifically the keyboard, available to students.
We are located in a district considered below poverty leve,l with an enormous amount of minority and bilingual students.
Our school is located in New York. Teachers at this school care so much. We purchase as much as we can for our students, but our financial support can only go so far. My class is composed of students with varying learning disabilities. Although they face many challenges, there is one challenge they are actually excited to face. Learning to play the keyboard! My students all have one thing in common, the love of music. Our desire is to make the keyboards available to my students to begin to learn, or practice skills they already have. Our school has, for the first time ever, a school band! What's missing is keyboards. We hope that by the end of the year, my children will be able to participate in formal assemblies and shows displaying their new talent of playing the keyboard.
It is a well know fact that there are numerous benefits to music education. Recent studies have clearly indicated that musical training physically develops the part of the left side of the brain known to be involved with processing language, and can actually wire the brain's circuits in specific ways. I read an excerpt from an article that mentioned how recent studies show that students who study the arts are more successful on standardized tests. With such an emphasis on academic study, student programs such as music, art, and physical education are being cut and replaced with test preps and more work. For students with disabilities, academics can be a huge challenge. We need to tap into their multiple intelligences. They are intelligent and we must give them the opportunities to shine in the areas they are successful in! Through music, students can be provided with opportunities to be successful in something other than academics. Children are creative!
We are asking donors to provide us with two keyboards and an amplifier for students to play and compose music.
The keyboard stickers will help students with their scales. Will you help us by providing the gift of music to our class?
