Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing, ambitious and so hard working but have grown up in difficult circumstances which limit their access to resources - in particular technology.
Several are English Language Learners, a significant number qualify for free lunch and the devastation of Harvey is still impacting a huge amount of them, leaving them without a stable and secure home routine.
In my class, I try to provide them with opportunities to be on par with their peers in Houston, regardless of their circumstances and give them the opportunity to be young adults in a world that requires them to be older than they are!
My Project
My students are keen to learn but most lack basic organizational skills and core supplies to be truly productive in a 50 minute lesson By the time they've searched for their supplies, asked a friend and eventually asked me, we've lost valuable learning time.
A place for everything and everything in its place - by creating a Supply Station with their bare necessities, I hope to build invaluable organizational skills that will extend beyond the classroom.
By eliminating the constant searching in backpacks, I believe that students will be able to take the initiative to collect and replace their supplies and focus at the work at hand.
