My Students

We love to play instruments with the beat in music and with stories, but we don't have enough instruments to use. Our classes are growing in size, but our instrument inventory is not!

My students are elementary students in grades 1-5 who attend a public school in Illinois.

They attend music class twice a week. I like to provide my students with regular opportunities to use instruments as part of their music class. My students love to play all types of instruments! Hands-on learning is vital to our active music classroom. I also use children's books in music class, and my students animate the stories with music. We love bringing stories to life!

My Project

Our music classroom is a vibrant, active learning environment where students regularly have instruments in their hands to explore beat, rhythm, and timbre. Many of the instruments at our school have been there for years and are showing significant wear and tear. Some are no longer usable. Our class sizes are growing, and I do not have enough instruments to use in many of the larger classes, even when students partner up and take turns. I want my students to always have opportunities to be actively engaged in music learning and to play instruments as part of their elementary school music experience. I am requesting more lummi (rhythm) sticks, shakers, Sound Shape drums, and other sound effects so we can "click, clack, and all that" in our music class.

In my 9 years as an elementary music teacher in our district, I have only once received $100 from the district to purchase instruments for my classroom.

Our district is facing significant budget challenges this year, so I know that I must look outside my district for funding if I want to provide instruments for my students. Thank you for considering our request and helping us be active music makers!
