I am a second grade teacher. I will have 20 students in my class. Fifty percent of my students are on free or reduced lunch. Many of my students have learning disabilities of some form. They do not learn well using the traditional worksheet approach. I would like to have a one digital camera to do special projects. One project I would like to do is have the students make I Spy type books. These books allow the students to engage in creating and taking a picture of items that they think are important or interesting. They then write rhyming clues for the reader to find the items in the pictures they arranged. The students have to rhyme, use adjectives, and think about word order. An example is: I see two eyes of blue and a red old shoe. They then create books to read to the kindergarten classes, which helps their self esteem. Also, they will get to put their books in the library for others to enjoy. They will also take pictures of other activities we will do and use these pictures to illustrate reports and reflect on their learning. Also, we will be making individual scrapbooks, which will have pictures and paragraphs describing the pictures. They will be able to keep these as a reminder of 2nd grade. These hands-on activities will help them enjoy writing and reading more. Also, as they show them to their families, I hope that the parents will become more involved in school.
