Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at WHS represent at least 16 countries around the globe. Each student has a different culture, background and/or journey which makes their story truly unique. The halls of our school are indeed diverse. Our girls' soccer team is a prime example of the diversity within our school.
The majority of our students have a goal to pursue a post-secondary plan; such as, community college, college/university, technical school, or entering the workforce with a certificate they earned in high school.
Over 95% of our students are a part of the free and reduced lunch program and/or receive fee waivers to take the ACT. Financial barriers are a common denominator for our students to push forward to achieve their goals.
My Project
My passion is coaching. Once I completed my time as a college athlete I easily transitioned into coaching soccer. I love the game of soccer and I have a desire to invest in high school students on and off the field. I believe sports help our students develop character, leadership skills, sportsmanship qualities, and how to be a part of a team. Being a part of a team can be a self-esteem booster. Each season I see players grow in confidence.
I have been an athlete my entire life and I was fortunate to have proper shoes, apparel, and equipment to compete.
My student-athletes will practice in whatever they have on that day at school. Sports specific gear is not a necessity to them. However, it is a necessity to participate in games. The lack of soccer cleats tends to be a common barrier for our girls. Conditioning, practicing, and playing in properly sized cleats will decrease soreness and further injury. I would like to provide the girls with soccer cleats so they will be prepared to compete to the best of their abilities and feel confident in themselves.
