I am privaleged to serve Oakland's finest students!
Economically disadvantaged, but rich in character and intellect, the students of our middle school achieve strong results despite the fact that they are located in one of the most impoverished and underserved areas of Oakland.
They accomplish this via hard work, perseverance, and the belief that education is the key to choice and, ultimately, equality. Last year, the students in my 8th-grade class exceeded 70% proficiency, well above the district, city, and state average outcomes.
Every day, my students and I engage in complex grade-level text. This is despite the fact that many of my students begin the year well below grade level. This is made possible via modeling strategies to engage said text such as Reading for Purpose and Reading for Understanding. Additionally, both of these strategies are reliant upon annotation. Unfortunately, our technology is a little behind the times. The document camera and the projector that I use do not project the text clear enough to be seen by all, especially those who are seated in the back of the room and/or those who have vision challenges.
