Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inner-city students, who all qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students are from single-family homes and some were raised by maternal and paternal grandparents.
According to the district benchmarks, fifty percent of my students are working below grade level in math and reading.
We currently have some intervention programs in place that have supported the students, but we are still striving for better performance.
I have 26 students who rely on the comfort zone of their school and classroom. They are very motivated and become very excited when their success is recognized. The learning environment is based on a rotation model where individual students' needs are met. The model incorporates small group instruction, independent work, technology, and collaboration stations. The students' classroom is a safe place where there is consistency and high expectations. Every day they are highly engaged in learning activities that involve communicating and collaborating with one another to enhance their learning. Having a safe and comfortable learning environment keeps them motivated.
My Project
Teaching during the Covid Pandemic has been difficult and scary for my students. Having to wear a cloth mask all day and not being able to see their beautiful smiles will only make it harder.
Second graders, learning to read new words and language, need to be able to see and hear the correct pronunciation.
Having a clear face shield will allow each student to be comfortable throughout the day while they continue to learn. Providing each student with an alternative face mask, will help them articulate and express themselves safely.
