I am a speech-language pathologist in a Title 1 school. The children I work with range in age from 3-11. My students are diverse in background, race, social economic status, and ability. Some students work on articulation (producing correct speech sounds ) and some students work on increasing their language skills (understanding others and expressing themselves).
They ALL work hard to be excellent communicators!
We work together to create a safe space to work on skills that are hard. My students who work on articulation bring their new sounds back to the classroom to help them be understood and learn to sound out words when reading and writing. My students who work on language skills learn to follow directions, use a wider vocabulary, use appropriate grammar, problem solve, and explain their thinking. I also have a variety of students on the Autism Spectrum who learn to interpret social cues and rules and use them appropriately to make friends in their classroom.
Many of my students experience unstable home lives, but I am able to work with them from preschool through fifth grade. I am fortunate to help students go from being nonverbal to holding conversations with teachers and peers.
My Project
We are attending school in person during the COVID pandemic. To stay safe, we need to wear masks at all times, sit as far apart as possible, and clean and sanitize our space between groups. With traditional masks, I can't see my students' mouths to see how they are producing their sounds.
We need masks with a clear panel so Ms. Amanda can see our mouths and better help us produce our sounds correctly!
Please consider donating to raise money for these masks to be used only during speech therapy.
