My students need hand sanitizer, Lysol, and Clorox cleaning spray to disinfect frequently used items in the classroom daily to prevent the spread of illness.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In the United States, there are approximately 164 MILLION lost school days each year among students in kindergarten to grade 12 which averages out to 4.5 sick days per student per year. In fact, some studies have shown that kindergartners on average have 12 colds a year, while older kids develop about seven.
As cuddly as they are, children are walking germ factories!
From hugs to tantrums, runny noses and uncovered sneezes, children are learning how to protect themselves and others from contagious illness.
Although my students are no longer infants and toddlers, they still need a level of nurturing that is greater than older students. These young scholars are learning how to respect the personal space of others. They are learning cultural norms like "cover your mouth," and "wash your hands-with soap" is still a refrain for these scholars as they exit the restroom.
My Project
Last year was one of the worst years for the flu on record. There were scores of hospitalizations and some deaths as a result of the flu nationwide. Our school saw significant absences from both students and staff.
One of the factors that made the flu so difficult to manage was that the flu shot that was administered wasn't the most potent against that particular strain!
Kids can't learn if they are not in school and teachers aren't teaching if they aren't there either.
This year, with your help, we will be better prepared with hand sanitizer, Lysol, and Chlorox cleaner.
