My Students

I am an art educator in an urban elementary school serving students of a low socio-economic status. The majority of them are English Language Learners, and many are new arrivals to this country. Working with an entire school's student body, I get to know students as individuals and as part of their school community. Arts play an integral role in schools, and for many of my students, it is the high point of their day.

Although my students face many hardships in their lives, when they come into the art room they are still just young children brimming with creative potential and enthusiasm for experiencing the joy of creation.

My goal is to provide my students with the best art education possible, allowing them to experience diverse materials and processes, as well as fostering within them a spark of self-exploration and self-efficacy that will stay with them as they grow.

My Project

The art room is a busy place--hundreds of students pass through in a day--and each class is working on something different. My students and I are requesting Clorox wipes to continue to maintain the cleanliness of the art room; to be used after a messy project and after each day in order to start the following day fresh and clean.

Not only does cleaning the tables each day help all my students stay healthy, it gives them a sense of ownership.

My students love helping to keep our space clean, and it benefits us all in more ways than one!
