Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in an urban area surrounded by cement, cars, factories, liquor stores, and old buildings. They come from low-income families and many don't travel out of our mid-sized city. My students are mostly Hispanic, but also African-American and Caucasian.
Most of their parents did not attend college or even complete high school, but they want the best for their children.
They are just trying to get by, supporting their kids in the ways they know how. They count on the school to educate their children and provide them with experiences that will help them do better in life.
My Project
I am asking first for a doormat with an inspirational saying to welcome students every day into the room with positive and encouraging words. Each day they cross into the classroom the words, "Dream Big" and "Work Hard" will be engrained in them.
In order to keep that sense of positivity going throughout the day, we need a physically nurturing environment that fosters responsibility and belonging.
I have asked for a vacuum cleaner and a Swiffer Wet Jet to keep our laminate flooring clean and our classroom rug dirt-free. No one likes to sit on mud!
Responsibility is important, and classroom jobs are a part of our daily routine. At the end of the day, there will be students vacuuming the rug and cleaning the spots from the floor. When students come in from recess on a wet day, they often have mud all over their shoes and they will see the effect that has on our floor. Students will take ownership for their own classroom. They spend 7 hours a day at school, and their classroom is like their second home. When they take responsibility for keeping the classroom clean, they feel a sense of belonging and community.
Jobs like these also teach students how to clean at their own home. Many aren't responsible for cleaning at home, and won't family members be surprised to see that they know how to clean up!
Lastly, I am asking for disinfectant wipes for weekly cleaning of desktops and counters. Our desks get very grimy and students should be responsible for keeping their area clean. This teaches them about cleanliness and about eliminating germs and staying healthy.
These supplies will keep our classroom sparkly clean and make it a place where students feel welcome, comfortable and happy.
