Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am 2nd grade teacher in a low income/high poverty school and I work with an inspirational group of second graders. Many of the students that I work with are highly impacted by trauma, poverty and immigration. Some struggle with homelessness and transportation yet the resilience these students show in difficult situations is way beyond their years.
My students come to school hungry and thirsty.
My students receive a free breakfast, lunch and snack every day. However, some days that is still not enough.
My Project
My students go to a school where there is lead in the pipes. Upon this discovery, the school district provided clean water with paper triangle cups that can only be used once. My students spend a lot of time out of their desks getting water, asking for cups and throwing away their cups once they are finished. If they try to reuse the cup after one use the cup has normally deteriorated and water spills everywhere. They then have to spend more time cleaning up the water all over the floor and themselves. Some remember to bring a water bottle but others forget. I need these requested stainless steel cups that stay in class and I can then clean at my home and bring back.
When my students arrive late to school and they have missed the free breakfast snack is their first chance for food that day.
We almost always have fresh fruit or veggies but a few carrots on an empty stomach is sometimes not enough. I need an emergency stash of granola bars for students who are hungry and cannot learn because their stomach is roaring. Tajín is a spice that almost all of my students love to put on their fresh fruit and veggies. It will get the most reluctant students to try and new food and eat it up. Tajín is the secret ingredient we have all been waiting for to get kids to beg for more fruit and veggies!
