I would describe the kids I teach as inquisitive, caring, and balls of energy. I teach special needs students in grades two through four. Being part of a team of five teachers, we are on the front lines of teaching these sponges for knowledge. Utilizing research-based and hands-on strategies, auditory and visual learning techniques really match each child's unique learning style.
Each one of my kids is unique in their own way; while one kid may learn with a hands-on approach, another may just need to hear it.
Many of my children have dyslexia where they reverse numbers or letters. But I also teach children who have ADHD, Autism, speech and language delays, developmental delays and other health impairments.
So to reach each and every one of their special personalities, I use centers in my classroom. We also use many positive reinforcers at school such as a point system where they can buy things like sitting in the teacher's chair, small snacks, or raffle tickets. They also get rewarded monthly if they reach their behavior goals. Our school is a fun and interactive environment where learning and strengthening our minds is the goal.
My Project
Attendance is vital in learning and growing. But how can a kid come to school if they are sick? I am asking for Clorox wipes and Lysol spray for the beginning of the year so my kiddos can stay healthy. One of the classroom jobs at the end of the day is to clean desks so this would be perfect for my kid's to do. And when they do get sick and come to class we are in need of Kleenex for them. Instead of going to the bathroom to blow their nose, they are able to stay and learn.
"Clean up after yourselves, house elves don't work here" is a quote from Harry Potter.
Harry Potter is my classroom theme and my kiddos love it! I teach 1, 2, 3 and 4th grade special needs in a resource room setting. So my kiddos come and go all day long. Different grade levels and different subjects are being taught throughout the day. Therefore, it is even more important to have a clean room because there is so much exposure with each child that comes into my room.
