Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low-income, high poverty neighborhood in Chicago. Over 97% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches based on their socio-economic backgrounds.
My middle schoolers are passionate, highly motivated individuals who have mixed interests and challenge themselves everyday.
My classroom includes children with learning disabilities, come from families experiencing poverty, or have limited English proficiency. However, they all enjoy working together and encourage each other in and out of of school. Despite the challenges they face in and out of school, our teachers always try to create meaningful academic and social emotional experiences, that peek their interests.
My Project
My students come from low income households. Sometimes they do not have a washer or dryer available to come to school with clean clothes. Some families do not have the resources to purchase a new uniform for the new school year. Sometimes my growing middle schoolers do not get a chance to eat breakfast in the morning or are tired out by the middle of the day because they did not have a proper meal or breakfast.
By supporting this project you will be helping in supplying some of the basic needs students lack, before coming to school.
Most growing teens are already hungry an hour after the day started, right after lunch, or before the day is over, which often results in the students' lack of focus and motivation during class time. Items such as granola bars and cookies will be used as a much needed "late breakfast" for those students who can't make it in time for the breakfast that's served at school, and those students who we know are not able to get that extra meal when they get home. Other items such as the packs of socks and t-shirts will be used during those times children come to school without them, which is not uncommon. Most families do not have access to a washer and dryer at home, resulting in students bringing in pre-worn, dirty clothes. In the winter, students come in with wet shoes and socks causing them to get sick and miss school days.
Having these items available will allow my students to focus, feel secure and valued.
