Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of my favorite quotes is "It takes a village to raise a child". I'm not only responsible for their learning, but I also have the responsibility to create a safe, CLEAN, creative space where students' focus is to be inspired and engage in academic conversations. Every child deserves a clean rug!
My students are loving, curious, competitive students who thrive on learning something new everyday.
They are my little sponges! They absorb all the academic information that is provided to them and are EAGER to know more. As they come to school, they must cross our crime ridden streets where hookers stand on each corner of the main street of our school as early as 7AM. They must cross through streets which, after 13 years, have not forgotten the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Our school is a safe haven. Students are emerged and inspired to be the best they can be. Their neighborhood does not define them. They come from loving homes who believe their child can succeed. Their parents are involved and invest their time to clean our classroom and help set up breakfast in the classroom on a daily basis.
My Project
My little scholars are oblivious to germs or dirt. They are only first graders and they don't judge what we have, but embrace everything that is given to them. I am requesting a rug. A clean rug! A rug that has not been in the same room for more than 5 years. Our current rug is old, torn, dirty and has had years of book binding tape added on to make individual squares so that each student has their own personal space in the rug. Our rug time is like gold! Its where we do everything! Seventy percent of our day is spent on our rug. We write, we have story time, we have math time, we act out performances, we lay down to read, we have centers... We do almost everything in the rug. I consider our rug time, like a cocoon. We are close enough to hear each other and have collaborative groups, yet with these individual squares, students have their own wiggle room.
Please help us get a clean rug!!
My students are often getting sick and I'm beginning to wonder if it has to do with the rug. My students' parents sweep, mop, and sanitize our desks and floors, but we just can't seem to clean the rug. The more elbow grease we invest, the dirtier it gets. I am so very proud of how hard my students work and persevere through challenging moments. My students will thoroughly enjoy having a new rug. Please help us make that possible for them! They deserve it!
