Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th and 8th grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our students are diversity personified: from painfully shy to audacious; from studious to silly; from spoiled to neglected; from being treasured to experiencing trauma. Recently, several students have had parents deported, and they don't know when or if they will see that parent again. When they arrive at my door each day, some are ready to be challenged and others are ready to be challenging!
It's so important to give our students a reason to come to school every day, and I believe a kitchen lab that is stocked with cleaning supplies helps create a welcoming, inclusive, and FUN place for learning about health and nutrition.
My Project
Our kitchen lab is a lively place where students can work together and enjoy cooking together in teams. Our program has been built almost 100% by the kindness and generosity of our DonorsChoose.org friends and partners, and we are blessed to have so much amazing support. We are really trucking along, and our lab is almost nearly transformed from the neglected space we began with two years ago; however, we are still missing a few necessary items.
Last week, during our fresh salsa and quesadilla lab, a student accidentally spilled a whole pitcher of lemonade on the floor: with no mop except a Swiffer, it took a LOT of dish towels, paper towels, and Swiffer pads and solution to clean up the mess.
Having absorbent mops and a mop bucket would help clean up spilled liquids and prevent accidental slips and falls.
While cleaning up the mess, we ran out of Swiffer cleaning solution and Swiffer pads, so we are hoping to get more. We're on our last few rolls of paper towels, too, which we use all the time. The drawer organizer will help me have a place to keep pens and pencils, hair bands, and other small items that we need during labs. I plan to put it on top of our dryer so students can grab what they need from a central location. Thanks so much for considering our project!
