In my first grade class we have "morning meetings" and "story time" on a small rug. The rug that is currently in our class is very small and very dirty. Only half of the students fits on this 5' x 7' rug at a time. More than the dirt (which is inevitable with children), we just need bigger space. I want all of the students to have a soft place to sit while they listen to stories, do their independent reading and begin the day during morning meeting. An 11' x 13' rug would be ideal. The pattern, color, or shape (oval, rectangle, square) honestly does not matter--just size and comfort. Our first grade class is an inclusion classroom. This means that about 40% of the students have special learning needs. All of the students are either 5 or 6 years old. Our school serves students that are very high needs. Over 90% of the students qualify for lunch and breakfast. We are located in an area of Harlem in which three shelters feed our school. One of the things I love about my students is that they are wonderfully appreciative of anything they get. Even a sticker means a lot to them. The only material needed for this "project" is a large, clean rug. All 23 students will participate on this rug every day of the year. In fact, we will probably spend close to an hour there each day. I want my students to have this rug so that they can all sit together in a comfortable, cozy place. I want the students to feel a welcoming, home-like atmosphere in our classroom. (PS--I saw some rugs at the Home Depot that were on clearance because they had out-of-fashion patterns. They were about $399, but were marked 50% off. Something like this would be great. Please feel free to purchase an item that differs from the one I selected online.)
