My Students
"If we can conquer space, we can conquer childhood hunger." ~ Buzz Aldrin
As diverse students with disabilities, it is important that they are able to come to school with the basic essentials needed to be ready to learn.
My students are energetic and fun inner-city high school students. My students have a range of disabilities including learning disabilities, visual impairments, autism and intellectual disabilities. A majority of them are also English Language Learners. My students show greater enthusiasm when they have a clean and safe learning environment and when they are not hungry.
My school is located in a large, urban city. Of our 3,100 students, 94% are low-income, 10% of the students have disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners. More than 75% of my particular students are low-income, have disabilities and/or are English Language Learners. I teach my students not to let their ethnicity, personal home situations, English Language Learner status or disabilities hinder their academic or social-emotional growth.
My Project
This project provides students with basic necessities that many don't have readily available at home. Students will use the snacks to keep hydrated and to have energy during their long days of school. The Clorox wipes will help keep our classroom germ free. As flu season is upon us, students need tissue, hand sanitizer and lotion readily available to keep them from spreading germs when they are sick. The sweaters will keep students warm during the cold winter.
So many students have come to school hungry, ill or not dressed appropriately for the winter; they deserve to have basic necessities readily available.
I have completed similar projects for basic needs items. Students are always so grateful when I can hand them a snack or a pack of tissue. My students are wonderful and deserving; these resources will support not only support their health, but their confidence and readiness to learn.
