Hello, I am a teacher working in an under-served community at a Title I school for over 30 years! Most of my students come from low-income families and our school gives them a place of security. They work so hard and they love to explore, discover and learn. Due to the impact of COVID-19, many of our families have lost jobs and income and are not necessarily able to afford the basics. I am troubled when a child comes to school with clothing that is unclean. We know that access to clean clothing is one small but important barrier to attendance and learning. If we were able to wash items like clothing or even coats and send them home clean I know our families would be grateful. The children have already been through so much. I know that this will help with their self-esteem and help them stay focused on what is important in their education. It is for all of the above reasons that I am requesting your help today.
Having a washer and dryer available will help us to clean children's clothing should they have an accident or come in with unclean items is important. Children who are clean and happy tend to do well in school.
Research has shown that there is a connection between access to clean clothes and attendance rates.
Our students have enough to worry about without needing to be concerned about clean clothes. Knowing that school is like a second home for many of our students, we want to make sure they are happy and healthy here.
