Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 28 very enthusiastic 1st graders. Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area surrounded by factories among the industrial sector of downtown Los Angeles. We are classified as a Title I school, and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students are all English language learners, some of whom are also struggling with learning disabilities. The majority of the parents of my students work long hours in the surrounding factories. Though they can provide some of the basics such as food and shelter (though some families live in groups together). Providing things such as new school uniforms, shoes, socks and jackets don't rate high as essentials for survival.
My students have many obstacles in their path; poverty, social, community challenges (gangs), language, in addition to a few with learning disabilities all which impede or hinder my student's opportunity for success in the future.
Due to the limited resources available in our school they are unable to supply some necessary tools needed in the everyday classroom.
My Project
The laundry detergent will assist my student's family in sending their kids to school with clean clothes and ready to learn. Many families don't own washing machines and go to the local laundromat when they can afford it. The students come to school wearing the same clothing at times because they have no other choice. New clothes are a low priority on the list of necessities such as food, shelter and bills. Many of my students wear their siblings hand me downs to save money.
Having clean clothes help students maintain a sense of self confidence among their peers.
Feeling good about oneself helps students become more successful students. Students notice when one's clothing is old or dirty. At times these issues can affect student attendance. They are afraid to come to school because they believe they may be teased by other children. With this laundry detergent I can help families defray some of the cost they incur at the laundromat.
