Our school is a small yet diverse community. We like to call it our own “Little Manhattan.” On any street, sidewalk, or store in our Township, you will find people of all races, cultures, and religions. We pride ourself on diversity.
While we have an abundance of diversity, the economic opportunities in the area are severely limited.
Each Leopard in my gymnasium has a passion to make themselves better every day. Our program is student-centered and encourages small-sided gameplay with a focus on tactical problem-solving. I am blessed with a unique situation that allows me to service wonderful students grades 7-12.
In addition to teaching physical education, I also am the 7th and 8th-grade basketball coach. I teach and coach the students the basic basketball skills as well as the game and how to show good sportsmanship.
Due to a lack of clean clothes, they often wear their clothes over and over again without having access to a washer and a dryer to make them clean in between each use. This causes them to feel uncomfortable with sitting in a classroom next to other students with dirt from prior days messes, as well as knowing that their clothes are creating an odor all around them.
While I have provided them with clothes as much as I can, the best thing I can think of to do is to provide them and/ or their families with access to a washer, dryer, and detergent to make what they have work until they can obtain their own.
Currently, our school does not have access to a washer and dryer. This project would provide my students in need, as well as several other students I work with in the school, a chance to bring their clothes in to get clean. Hopefully this would provide my students with a peace of mind of having clean, properly fitting clothes so that they can focus more on learning and achieving their goals!
