Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are growing up in a major city in our state. Per capita, this city has been rated in the top five most dangerous cities in the past fifteen years. Drugs, poverty, homelessness and gun violence have wreaked havoc on this once thriving city and my students are living in the midst of this chaos. They are constantly given the message that they are not good enough for state-of-the-art technology, top line resources, and comfortable classrooms.
The lack of resources affects the students every day.
My students need to believe that people are looking out for them and want them to succeed. Every day they strive to broaden their horizons and reach for the stars. For many, school is the only safe haven they know. I work to instill in them that there is a bigger world out there than the one they see every day, that they matter, and they will always have a safe place to explore the world around them in our classroom.
My Project
Coming to school in the same clothes as the day before, or with dirty clothes hurts. Kids feel shame and embarrassment, which in turn hinders their ability to concentrate and learn. I would teach my students life skills so that they could take care of their own personal needs. Being able to wash their own cloths will result in increased self-esteem which will result in increased independence outside the Special Education environment.
My students would not be socially stigmatized because they are wearing dirty cloths and smell bad.
We will use the Laundry Detergent in our life skills classes. Our students will be able to leave my class with skills that they can use the rest of their lives.
