My students need to be able to work in a clean and germ free environment to be successful with their research and academic assignments while in the Library Media Center. This prevents illness and absenteeism.
Our students come from many cultures and speak various languages but all share the need to learn English as a new language. Students are also from diverse socioeconomic statuses. Some students come from families that live in a single family home while other students reside in public housing.
Our school was flooded after our community has hit by hurricane Sandy.
Some students are now finally living in refurbished house as a result of this event. Following the hurricanewe relocated to a neighboring high school for two months. We returned back to our school and continue our work with students. We serve the population of students that remained in this geographical area.
In addition to educating our general education students, English as a new language students, we have a large special education population. Our school is a Title I school entitling students to receive free lunch.
My Project
Students visit the Library every day to browse and check out books for pleasure reading and to complete assignments.
The library is used by the entire school community.
These resources will help me to keep the library germ and dust free. The items that have been requested will assist me and student members of the I.S. 2 Library Squad to sweep, dust, and clean the Library so that it will be a clean environment for students to complete projects and assignments. Students and staff can sanitize their hands with the hand sanitizers that can be made easily available. Students regularly ask me for hand sanitizer. This will assist in keeping germs off the technology and other equipment that is available to the entire school community in the library. The Library is used by the entire student population and faculty which numbers almost 1,000 individuals.
