I am a Kindergarten teacher to 25 wonderful 5 and 6-year-old students! Many of my students have a hard time doing any activity that requires them to sit still for any longer than five minutes. They love participating in activities that let them get up and move and engage with their peers. Each student possesses a unique quality and helps the class have a climate all of its own. Our school is composed of low-income families, many of which receive free and reduced lunch and receive clothes through other programs, and also high-income families that have many different experiences that some students can't even dream about. This unique dynamic creates a class full of knowledge waiting to be shared.
The school is in a transitional period with many teachers moving away from traditional worksheets and packets to more engaging student-centered and technology-centered activities.
While technology is very important in today's world. Students are also lacking reading foundational skills because of the use of technology. We need more books being read to students and more books being read by students! I would like to incorporate more read alouds in my daily routine.
My Project
Year after year, my students sit on the same carpet that has been there since the school's opening. There are deep stains that you only dare guess what caused them. Which human fluid? Juice from a lunchbox? Who knows?
A clean carpet will provide a fresh start and help keep the classroom looking inviting and sanitized.
The carpets are rarely cleaned if at all. With everything going on it is a great time to refresh. This particular carpet also provides more defined spots for their bottoms and will help those who need extra support with spatial awareness for their bodies.
