My Kindergarten class is group of highly diverse students at a K-5 public school in Hawaii. We are a Title One school with a large English Learner and socioeconomically disadvantaged student population. 65% of our 800 students participate in the free and reduced lunch program.
Our teachers and staff work hard to provide a high quality education with very few resources.
Our greatest assets at this school are our fabulous teachers and their enthusiastic attitudes and dedication. The biggest struggle is creating engaging lessons and learning materials without the financial support from the school department.
At our school, we have high standards and in our class, we work hard to become "rockstar readers." I believe all students can and will learn to their highest potential and the best way for them to reach this potential is through a love for learning.
My projects are geared toward creating a rich learning environment for these keiki. I believe part that environment should include clean air to breathe and soft lights that bring calm to the room.
My Project
We live on Maui, which is famous for its red dirt. Unfortunately, that red dirt also fills our classroom, as has smoke from the brushfires this year. Our windows were boarded up when air conditioning was installed, and the remaining jalousie windows are not airtight. Everything in our classroom is covered with a layer of dust and dirt! Added to that and we have mold and mildew from the A/C unit and cold and flu germs floating around our room. This creates health issues for many of my students as well as myself.
It is hard to focus on learning when your asthma is triggered, or your allergies are causing your nose to constantly run.
And every year I have several students who suffer from asthma or have to miss school due to respiratory illnesses. And since our windows are boarded up, it means we need to rely on our overhead florescent lighting for all of our light in the classroom. It is impossible to keep our classroom clean and the glare from the lights is harsh on little eyes.
I want to get an Air Purifier and some light filters for my classroom so I can provide my students with a clean environment with fresh air to learn. This air purifier captures 99.97% of dust and allergens and the UV-C light technology works to reduce airborne bacteria, viruses, germs and mold spores.
I know that this will make a difference because one of my coworkers has recently added an air purifier to her classroom and other classes have the light filters. It is through this firsthand experience that I have learned how I can make a positive impact toward the quality of our classroom and the health of my students. Please help me provide a healthier classroom environment.
