Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students arrive from over 50 countries around the world! Many of my students are refugees, many live without their parents, many are children from migrant families. My students have seen and experienced much more than I have in my lifetime.
All of my students are immigrants and all of them are adolescents looking for understanding and support.
There are over 40 languages spoken in my school! My kids are incredibly resilient to move to a new country and intercede through adolescent adversity while learning a new language, English.
My Project
In my DonorsChoose project I am asking for two HEPA air filters and replacement filters for my classroom at school. Currently, we do not have an updated ventilation system in the classrooms and our windows only open 4 inches high. In NYC students are having "Learning Lunches" which means, teachers will be teaching and students will be learning, while eating. Unmasked.
Air filters are one way we can ensure a healthier classroom and the art materials are for projects that they may take home if we switch into remote learning.
Materials include collage materials. Collage is an accessible means of making art for my students. And finally, there is a book I would like to order for all my kids- I have found this book to be very meditative and fun. And I can't think of anything more our kids will need in a crisis like this... meditative and expressing art making. And lastly, there's one tech item, a tablet holder, because well now I'm your new Bob Ross. It'll be helpful to hold a steady camera and teach.
