My students come from a city of about fifty thousand people.
They have been raised in an environment that is best described as a mix between rural and moderately urban.
Some hunt and fish while others go to the Plaza to hang out. We have a large population of underprivileged and economically-disadvantaged students. They are geographically isolated from the rest of the world by two thousand miles of ocean, but have all the quirks and mannerism of many children their age. Our school has been striving to make them college and career ready by providing the technology and resources they will need to survive in this modern age.
My Project
My biggest challenge for my students this year has been dealing with the volcano emissions. Fissure 8 has created a continuous flow of red hot lava that has reached the ocean and destroyed roughly 700 homes. The ocean entry creates LAZE. Lava haze which contains acidic levels similar to battery acid. Halema'uma'u creator has started a cycle of eruptions and ash explosions that leave an ash fallout several times a week. The Students have come to school with sore eyes, throats, and headaches. Because my classroom is opened and does not have AC it is a constant battle to make sure the students air and breathing are not affected by the volcanic emissions. The air purifiers and fans will allow the students to have Clean Air for Everyone.
