I teach first graders who have grown up in a small town with the closest big city being an hour away. I try very hard to bring new experiences to them through books, technology and field studies.
My school is located in a very rural district and many of my students live in poverty.
All of my students qualified for free lunch this year and many are sent home food over the weekend. These incredible children aren't given many opportunities and very few have even had the chance to leave our state.
My Project
My students need an air purifier in our classroom. Did you know that according to one CDC report, 12.8 million school days were missed by students due to allergies and asthma? Our carpet is very old and is only deep cleaned during the summer break. It is vacuumed weekly but having that air purifier would remove airborne particles like dust, mold or pollen which may trigger allergies and asthma. Placing an air purifier in my students' environment may help to improve the indoor air quality, as well as reduce asthma and allergy symptoms. The poor air makes our children sick and negatively effects academic performance.
Breathing polluted indoor air may also reduce academic performance and increase absences in both students and teachers.
According to the EPA, young children are especially vulnerable to breathing airborne pollutants and particles, as their bodies are still developing. With one-half of the nation's schools linked to problems with poor indoor air quality, it is important to improve a school's indoor air quality to provide a nurturing environment for education to flourish.
I have made it my goal as their teacher to provide them with a clean, safe, and healthy environment as much as possible. My students need air filters to help catch the germs that are unavoidable in our classroom.
Please help us as we strive to have a clean and healthy school year!
