Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The sixth graders at my school come from diverse backgrounds. Many speak two languages and shoulder more responsibilities at home than a typical 6th grader because their guardians work multiple jobs. School allows them to have a place that they can come and be a kid; this is part of why I try to incorporate creative projects any time I can. The fidgets are to help them focus during class. Again, they have a lot going on outside of school, and having healthy strategies to help them focus during instruction is something I want to provide for them.
My students love every opportunity to be creative.
Creating "clay pens" allows them to express themselves in a different medium than they usually get to use. It also gives them a writing tool that is unique and special to them! Allowing them to make two pens each gives them the opportunity to gift one to someone they care about, and then keep one for themselves.
