My students are part of the Chinese Immersion program in 2nd grade. My Chinese partner and I work hard to provide a balanced education while providing a rigorous Chinese and English academic program in a fun and supportive environment. Chinese Immersion gives children preparation, and the cognitive development they need to succeed. The benefits are not only academic; students are also part of a diverse and multi-lingual community which provides them with the opportunity to see the world through new lenses and to gain a better understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Now with the COVID environment we live and learn in everyday, it is harder to find fun, safe, and creative ways to teach, explore, and still social distance.
Giving students skills using technology will be less stressful and more productive if our school or individual must learn from home for a short time.
Children learn and grow at a tremendous rate at their young age.
Finding new and creative ways to teach to all student learning styles is a challenge. Using technology is always a great way to get kids engaged.
My Project
In the Chinese Immersion program, I teach two classes for half day each. It is difficult to teach the language arts core and a little math in such a small amount of time. So it is imperative to find creative ways to help students practice and master required core concepts with less class time available.
The immersion program is rigorous and fast paced.
It is vital to provide activities and lessons that will maximize student learning while keeping our class safe and sanitized. My students are in a demanding program that they are eager to master.
I have had so much success using Chromebooks for reading instruction and practice. Students are also learning how to use Google Slides, and Google Docs. I have been teaching students to read passages on their Chromebook, record themselves, and then play it back. This does 2 things. It allows the student to hear themselves reading, and provides a recording for me (the teacher) to go listen to later. Furthermore, I can go back and listen to the students, make notes, and then provide further instruction to kids individually. These methods will prove to be so important when a student has to be quarantined for days, or when and if the school must all learn from home for a time.
Finally, having a wireless mouse that is assigned just to that child will be a safe way to keep children safe and healthy in class during this pandemic. The wireless mice will eliminate the need for cords, or other objects hanging from the desks. Keeping kids safe but in school is my ultimate goal. Helping kids learn and achieve in a healthy, environment is what all teachers are striving for in this COVID world.
