Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Stepping into a new classroom this January, a new grade, a new family is daunting. It's also exciting! My return to school comes mid-year after a fall spent about an hour away. The community my students live in can be a high need and yet, you will find some of the most resilient, kind, funny, energetic, and, most importantly, eager-to-learn students who are willing to climb mountains to learn.

Our class motto this year is TRY: Take Chances, Risk it, and Make Mistakes, and Yearn to do better than Yesterday.

Despite obstacles that would be too much for many adults, they remain bright, funny, and fun-loving, and they really enjoy the safety and security that school brings. Our school not only keeps the kids safe, but it's a place where learning comes alive. It's a building steeped in passion and excitement and it is my hope to continue to create a space that is safe, exciting, and educational!

My Project

Classroom transformations have long stuck with my students. Last year, we did a glow day and lit the room with black light. We also did a bakery day where math was at every cooking station! Students still call back to this experience.

This project is to be able to turn our classroom into an economic learning center with several stations for students to work on financial literacy.

The play money will be given out at different stations. First, where students are "working"; much like the game of "Life" students will each be given a career that makes x amount of dollars. Another station will be a bank where they can cash paychecks and deposit money into their savings. Several other stations will mirror vendors and sellers where goods can be sold.

Students will interact all day either as workers or bankers, or people engaging at these stations. At the end of the day, we'll debrief what we learned from each station, what money we were able to save the economic challenges when our families are bigger.
