My students need 30 books to teach grammar and writing strategies.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fourth grade bilingual writing teacher in need of mentor texts for teaching. I use trade books to show examples of a writer's craft. Telling kids about grammar and mechanics can be the equivalent of blah, blah, blah. My lips are moving but no one is listening. It seems better to "show not tell," students the mechanics of a writer's craft'. Students need to hear the flow of language, its patterns, and syntax. I read aloud so that the flow of language becomes imprinted within their pool of vocabulary. Students who have limited experience in English need this even more. Whether they understand the words or not, reading short text builds their English vocabulary pool, along with comprehension. If 50 percent of what we say is repeated text from previous text encounters, then the better the literature we should read aloud. Teaching trade books are well written. They promote thought provoking writing, especially because they are short. Students find it easier to use these books to gain a better understanding of a writer's craft. Although chapter books are just as important, ESL/Bilingual students may not always grasp hold of concepts as quickly as other students. Sometimes students need to hear and see good introductions and well written endings. It gives them ideas how to start and end their writings. Short mentor trade books are a great visual. Students can easily see and understand grammar processes. Grammar can be difficult for any student. Short trade books can help students understand the usage of dialog because they can see it and hear it in action. Mentor trade books are a necessary part of an effective teaching classroom. Thank you for helping build our classroom teaching/literacy library. Many of our students find it easy to pick up on the everyday street or T.V. language and are capable of speaking it well. It's putting language on paper that's challenging. Thank you for helping our students better express themselves with grammar
