Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in Salt Lake City, UT where 97% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Over 75% of my students are English language learners. The languages spoken in my students' homes include Spanish, Burmese, Hakha Chin, Mele, Tongan, Swahili, Somali, and Navajo. Some of my students' families have been in the U.S. for generations, while others are newly arrived immigrant and refugee families from all over the world. For the past two years, I have taught in one of the school district's inclusion classrooms. This means that the focus is on inclusion for students of all different ability levels and learning needs (both special, general, and English language education) in a setting that meets those needs on a unique, individual basis.

Despite some obvious differences, all of my students have a love for learning and an innate sense of compassion and empathy.

I am blown away daily by their ability to show up over and over with the same enthusiasm for learning and inquisitive nature towards life. I am also transformed by their kindness and concern for not only those in the classroom community but the greater world.

My Project

Students need increased manipulatives and small group support during this pandemic. Some of these materials will be sent home with students who are quarantining to give them access to high-quality supplies and learning tools at home. The rest will be used to enhance small group instruction to continue to close some learning gaps that have widened during the past two years!

First, students are able to access math better with manipulatives.

Specifically for my English Language Learners, they need to see physical representations of these fractions. One lesson might look like using the different representations of equal parts (for example, a circle manipulative and a rectangle) and then using our different color whiteboard markers to create a number line showing equivalent fractions. For my students who struggle with math, the color-coding helps. They may use a red marker to label halves and a blue marker to show fourths. This helps create a distinction, but still show equivalence.

The multiplication tools such as the pop-its and the flashcards will be also used in small groups in more of a centers type learning. This will be to help develop automaticity with facts in my students. Having their multiplication and division facts memorized will decrease their cognitive load for word problems, equivalent fractions, long division, and multi-digit multiplication.

Finally, reading resources included in this project will be used to differentiate instruction for my students' different needs. It has been difficult to meet all needs of students without the adequate supplies when students' levels and needs have differed even more greatly due to the pandemic. Fluency passages will help students independently monitor and grow in fluency. Novels will help develop comprehension in students that need it and the vocabulary journals will be used to help students who need more explicit and structured vocabulary practice.
