I teach mathematics within a Basic Academic Skills program at the high school level. Most of my students perform well below grade level yet have a great desire to grasp functional math skills that they will use in everyday life especially upon exiting high school. My students have disabilities ranging from learning disabilities, intellectual disorders, and emotional disabilities that interfere with the learning process.
My students enjoy learning, especially hands on learning where they can touch materials and use things that relate to real life.
In my classroom I try to foster a spirit of community and working together to help each other learn and maximize each individuals potential. The students that I work with come from diverse backgrounds and speak many languages. Many of them have struggles at home that they must cope with while at the same time struggle in the classroom to overcome more obstacles.
I teach a special education math class and the most important supply that I ask my students to bring is a pencil...and most do! But I do not have an electric pencil sharpener to keep these pencils sharp all year round! My students would greatly benefit from an electric sharpener as well as the various markers and whiteboard supplies. I run a very interactive and hands on classroom where my students are always coming to the board to solve problems or working in small groups using whiteboards to solve problems therefore, I am always running out of working markers.
A new easel and flip- chart paper will enable me to display my objective or "Do Now" problems for my students to see when they enter my classroom.
Many of my students are visual learners and having colorful markers to highlight key words or circle important information is essential for their learning.
