This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kiddos reside in the South Bronx and are all eager to learn and share their knowledge. They have had a couple of teacher switches this year and as their new ELA teacher, I'd like to create a space that can become trustworthy, comfortable, welcoming, and their own! One that will best support them and develop them as they continue on the rest of the year and through their state exams. While everyone's home experience is different, I want their classroom experiences to be some that they can never forget!

My Project

While the students in my classroom are eager readers, our library does not reflect this love. To be honest, it's a mess! It's packed full of hard to access bins and mislabeled baskets passed down from earlier teachers. The bins are so heavy that students cannot use them on their own and need teacher support to take out and return books. With these new book bins and labels, my students will associate the wonderful reading that we do in our classroom with a comfy, organized space that belongs to them. An organized library means that they can find their favorite books independently, as well as return books - to the benefit of all readers. The book display will allow us to showcase important books for each unit as well as give students the opportunity to recommend their personal favorites to others. I am asking for new classroom baskets and labels in various colors and sizes so that we can organize all of our books and keep our library looking neat and engaging. I am also asking for seat sacks so that my students can keep their books and materials organized in the classroom.

I am also asking for basic school supplies such as paper clips, index cards, pencils, chart paper, folders and markers to help create a learning experience for my students that ensures success.

I took over for a class just a few weeks ago and my classroom did not have the basic supplies that we need for academic achievement. I am asking for materials that my students will be using every day during literacy and math instruction. Thank you so much!
