Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher an in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they still come to school everyday to learn! However, my students have so many negative Classroom and school experiences and it is my goal to bring back engagement in the classroom. From the minute they walk into my classroom, I focus on their potential, growth, and dedication while they are with me. I focus on the people they will become and I am aware of all the challenges they face and want to do everything I can to help them! I want to make sure these children stay in school and become successful adults!
My Project
To see the faces and joy from our students when they learn in a way they never have before is like no other! Many of my students are experiencing success for the first time, and to stand back cheering them on is one of the greatest experiences of my life.
I am privileged to work with students who live in low socio-economic families.
Many of these families have never even left the city, been to a public library, or felt sand beneath their toes. In my specific classroom, I also have students with a range of learning and behavioral challenges. It is imperative that their learning is done in creative and hands-on ways. Creating experiences within the classroom to help build their background knowledge is a daily, weekly, and yearly goal. We are a school that sometimes doubles as a revolving door. Students are always moving into and out of our school due to their current living situation. With that in mind, the students often have a high academic frustration level while their love for school is very low. The goal for students in my room is for each student to feel success. Learning is fun when we think outside of the box! Using games is a great way to excite and engage our students. Having more options for life size games in our classroom will give our students the opportunity to use teamwork, academic content, and STEM to apply what they are learning. It is proven that students retain information better when they can tie it to an engaging or memorable experience. Life size games will provide those engaging and memorable experiences.
As teachers, one of our jobs is to teach students how to work in teams to accomplish their goals.
