Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Kindergarten students are part of a 50/50 Dual Language program, meaning that I teach them for half of the day in English and the other half in Spanish. They usually enroll in this program because their families come from countries like Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Though they live in one of the poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods of Philadelphia, these families are committed to their children's education. They go to great lengths to get their kids to school every day and to support them in their studies, in spite of serious hardships.
These parents want their kids to be equally literate and fluent in English and Spanish because they understand that this comes with both cultural and cognitive benefits that will improve their chances in life!
Dual language programs like ours do not just improve our students' sense of heritage and identity, but also their academic and professional opportunities. In my classroom, we see the value of cultivating literacy skills in both languages simultaneously, and we all learn from one another, no matter what our language dominance is. This creates a safe and supportive environment where all students and family members can thrive.
My Project
Learning in two languages takes a lot of time, effort, and most of all, materials! My Kindergarteners and their families are super hardworking and committed, but often cannot provide the basic materials necessary for our classroom.
This project will supply my students with developmentally appropriate basics such as a beautiful new classroom rug, primary notebooks and pencils for early writing, art supplies for creative exploration, and portfolios, folders and seat sacks to organize their work.
After seven years of teaching Dual Language Kindergarten, I have a wealth of pedagogical materials, but these consumables must be replenished every year as my kindergarteners feed their insatiable need for knowledge! Please help us shoulder this considerable financial burden!
