My Students
I am a 6th grade middle school special education math teacher. I have noticed that my students are most engaged when the classroom is visually stimulating. Research has shown creating a visually stimulating environment fosters critical thinking skills, reasoning helps to gain conceptual understanding of math concepts. My students have a variety of learning needs that require multiple entry points, such as visuals throughout the classroom, resource cards and other teacher made materials. They require hands on learning where they can create and observe activities that require physical exploration, especially in math where students are afraid of numbers.
As a special education teacher, the traditional style of teaching no longer suit the students needs because of their varying levels and skills the classroom must have differentiation tasks, use of technology and visuals aids.
Kinesthetic activities have a great impact on my students as they like to move around the classroom. This gives them a sense of freedom and choice. With your help, I can begin to take the steps to make the classroom visually friendly, with math manipulatives to help my students achieve their goals this year.
My Project
As a teacher working in a Title I school, supplies are very hard to come by. As a math teacher, my approach is a project based environment. The large anchor chart paper is for students to engage in group work, the laminating machine will be used to laminate and create project based stations. Most of students my tend to not have pencils handy. I provide all the tools, they need including dry erase boards, erasers, pencils, dry erase markers, to maximize instructional time. Most of the work involves data and teaching to data, I would like students to track their progress by having a hanging file folder that is easily accessible to them, parents and administrator as their portfolio.
