Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a third/fourth grade combination class (all subjects) with ESL inclusion at a Title I school in Durham, NC. Fourteen of my 23 students are ESL students.
I would like to start a classroom store for school supplies so that my students can utilize the math skills that are part of the third grade curriculum. I have found that when the skills are taught in isolation, students have a harder time maintaining the skill. I think a classroom store will provide real life experience, making learning math skills relative to their lives. It will spark an interest in math and give students a daily review of money, addition, subtraction, time, place value, and multiplication skills.
In addition to providing students with a valuable learning experience, I would like to use any profits from the store to help students who can't afford to pay for field trips. Many times, if a parent can't afford to pay for a field trip, they will just not give a child permission to go because they are too proud. I want to help reduce the cost and pay for students who can't afford another very valuable learning experience.
In order to make this store happen, I will need a copy of Classroom Store Works software, a locking cash box, a gross of pencils, a gross of erasers, and a gross of pens and other school supplies.
This gift will continue to help students for years to come.
