Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from rural communities, mostly Latinx, and children of farmworkers. 85% of my students are at or below the poverty level making the entire school district eligible for free school meals. My students rely on the food from school to keep them full and satisfied. For some of them, the school breakfast and lunch are the only food they get. About 40% of the students will be the first generation of high school graduates, and about 60% will hopefully become the first college graduates in their families.
These kids have strong physical work ethics, they can get out there in any weather and work their tails off doing all kinds of work.
Some of them lack support from home for their academic efforts. Many of my female students are the babysitter or mom when they get home from school and on the weekends. They have to help clean and cook and don't have much time left in the evenings to study or do homework and even if they do have time, they are emotionally and physically exhausted. Many of the boys are working outside the home or in the family business after school and on weekends.
My Project
These alternative seating options will allow my students when in class, to relax and sit comfortably instead of sitting in the hard plastic chairs that have been provided by the school district. These two chairs will be the beginning of a collection of alternative seating options I want to create for my students.
When students are comfortable, they are more open to learning instead of worry about their backside hurting.
I have sat in the chairs the students have to use for class and after just 20 minutes my hinney hurt so much it was distracting to me, an adult, imagine how that would be for a teenager.
