Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
By the end of the school year, I desire a culturally responsive classroom built by the students, where they are encouraged and welcomed to discover, explore, and engage with one another as a community, providing them with the opportunity to express their ideas and opinions.
A large percentage of my students are English language learners, in which English is their second language.
Several of them are bilingual and speak both Spanish and English. The elementary school is located in a low income community and is in desperate need of reconstruction, since it was built during the 1950s. Due to budget cuts and minimal financial support, our students lack the sufficient resources they need to excel academically.
My Project
I desire to provide a space for my 4th grade students to gather together and work collaboratively in groups and as an entire classroom. Typically, upper grade students lack a classroom rug in which they have the opportunity to join together as a class and engage in discussion. The classroom desks can prevent the students from communicating with one another in a comfortable and collective form. Community circles are an ideal activity that I would love to engage in with my students in a classroom rug. By sitting in a community circle, my students will be able to create discussions which can focus both on academics or social issues.
With the addition of a classroom rug, my 4th grade students will be able to practice their social skills in groups and as an entire classroom.
They will have an area where they can come together and listen to each others ideas. By engaging in collaborative discussions, my students will understand the importance of working together and also learn the importance of building a community within the classroom.
