Third grade is a year of amazing growth for students. Students work diligently on learning their multiplication facts, writing detailed stories, and working on reading skills. All of this could not be possible without the support of community members and parents.
My class of 23 students is filled with many different personalities and backgrounds.
I have students of different cultures, as well as different beliefs. Our school is made up of 360 students (25% of whom receive free or reduced-price lunch) who try to embody our three major school rules of being respectful, responsible, and safe. Every day teachers encourage students to dream, believe, think, and achieve.
The lessons and activities that take place at our "group meeting area" are an essential part of my students' daily learning. Group meeting activities help build classroom community and re-focus students' attention. A carpet to sit on during group meeting times will also be more comfortable for students, as they currently sit on a worn outdoor rug. Having this carpet in our classroom will save invaluable time, as energy can be focused on teaching and learning, rather than on directing and redirecting students on where to sit and to stay in their own space.
This carpet will benefit my current students as well as the students I will have in the future.
Important instructional time will be saved because students will have clear expectations about where to sit every time they come to the carpet to learn. This will help us to continue to grow a caring and respectful classroom community.
