Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Although I have been part of a classroom, this will be the first year on my own. I am extremely excited to begin working in a career that will allow me to make a difference in the lives of children. One way I hope to do so is by sparking the students' interest in reading.
The student population (over 500 students) is about 88 percent low-income and nearly 50 percent English language learners.
The school was flagged a level 4 school by the state for consistent under performance. Many changes are being made by a plan set to turn this around. I as well as other teachers are on a mission to provide students with the exceptional education that they deserve. Help from others makes this goal easier to achieve.
My Project
Students need to have solid reading skills. Those skills are used daily not only in academics, but in real life situations as well. By encouraging our students to strengthen their skills we begin to pave their path to success. I am hoping to do so by creating an organized, warm and inviting reading rug area. The reading rug area will be complete with folders of leveled readers for easy student access, a rug for group reading (both small and whole) as well as comfortable seating. Students at our school have expressed how much they enjoyed this type of atmosphere in prior years. These materials will replicate the atmosphere as well as show the students that their opinions are heard and valued.
As a first year teacher I will undoubtedly face challenges, however I will also find solutions.
Challenge number one for new teachers is building up the materials needed to promote successful learning. The solution I am hoping to find is help through DonorsChoose.
