Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are newcomers from over 30 different countries around the world: many of them have fled ethnic persecution, dire poverty, or war to find a better life here in CA. The large majority of our students (95%) qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Many struggle with the after-effects of trauma they experienced before, during, and after the immigration process.
Our students are resilient and wise, goofy and kind, and we are so proud of the progress they make each year in learning English and charting a path towards a better future for themselves and their families.
My Project
This year I'd like to bring some extra positivity into our Biology classroom through weekly Super Scientist Awards. Every week two to four students will receive Super Scientists Awards in each class, recipients will be nominated by teachers and students. Super Scientists will have contributed positively to the class community by helping others to learn or by demonstrating their critical thinking skills that week. Each award will come with a certificate and tickets to redeem a prize from the prize box. The prize box will be stocked with fun items that students can use to further their learning in school (cool pencils, sparkly pens, animal shaped erasers, pencil cases, etc).
The Super Scientist award is an opportunity for students to see themselves as successful scientists and receive praise from peers and teachers!
Every student will get at least one super scientist award over the quarter. I need funding to make the prize box extra fun and fully stocked year round with exciting prizes that students can use in their learning. Thank you so much for your support!
