Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in 7th and 8th grades and they receive daily lessons that require them to complete complex thinking strategies and apply advanced academic skills. Our school is a Title I school and all of our students receive free or reduced lunch. I have many students who benefit from the social-emotional learning lessons and the study skills we teach through programs like AVID.
In our class, we have also partnered with the San Diego Humane Society who come in and teach weekly lessons about animal care and the impact their foundation has on our community; these lessons have helped inspire this classroom project and have brought animal care awareness concerns to the attention of my learners.
My Project
The seventh-grade students in our class have been working with the local Humane Society here in San Diego in order to learn more about animal care, the services they provide, rescuing pets, and developing skills to care for living animals. During our work with the Humane Society, my learners have expressed an interest in actually applying everything that we are doing in our classroom in order to create a better learning experience.
After much reflection, we decided to rescue two senior rabbits from the Humane Society.
They have become our classroom pets and are currently wandering around our classroom, in and out of their temporary shelter. Since rabbits scare easily and can have serious health consequences because of "fright," we want to make sure that our classroom rescues have a safe place to go when they feel overwhelmed!
My students will develop caretaking skills as we care for these two rabbits. We have already seen character strengths like empathy and self-control being developed in learners who may have struggled in those areas in the past. Having these two rabbits has also given us a calming effect as we, ourselves, experience moments of stress. We are excited to have both Cinnamon and Clover here with us and cannot wait to give them a happy space of their own in our classroom!
