My Students
My classroom is located on the southwest side of Chicago and is filled with historically underrepresented but highly motivated students who love to explore topics in great detail. In order to provide access to careers in the applied sciences, our upperclassmen can enroll in Biotechnology, but sometimes their background knowledge needs some refreshing before they can apply the content to the more technical aspects of the the field.
One of the easiest ways for my students to deepen their scientific knowledge is through complex genetic databases, 3D modeling, computer simulations, any way to make the abstract microscopic concepts in a more realistic environment.
The ability to interact with a model of the RNA molecule or the transcription pathway allows students to form a deeper connection with the content beyond just text.
My students love to engage with the world around them - some of which they can see and some of which they need to rely on me to show them. The need to interact with these abstract concepts is something that they just can't do without the support of simulations and models.
My Project
Please help my Biotechnology students access genetic databases with 2 Chromebooks! Just offering a class like Biotechnology in an urban school like ours is a tremendous opportunity for most students. However, so much of the "technology" in Biotechnology requires the use of computers - a resource which is often in short supply.
The ability to bring biotechnology, one of the fastest growing professional fields, to students in an urban setting cannot happen without technology.
Without computers, students will not have the ability to learn how to use some of the important tools in this field. Put simply, they will not be prepared for future success.
So many of the computers we do have access to are broken, slow or being shared by other teachers. To be able to have a dedicated set of computers for my 120+ students would be an unbelievable asset...even adding two would help tremendously!
